US President Trump arrives in Singapore for historic Trump-Kim summit

Kim Jong Un will undoubtedly get a sense of all that as he arrives.

U.S. President Donald Trump flanked by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and White House Chief of Staff John Kelly attend a lunch with Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and officials at the Istana in Singapore June 11, 2018.

North and South Korea remain technically at war after the 1950-53 conflict ended in an armistice that Seoul's then leader refused to sign and divided the peninsula along the Demilitarized Zone.

Pompeo said in an earlier tweet that Washington was "committed to the complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula".

Just meeting with Trump will also give Kim recognition as the leader of a "normal" country and as an equal of the USA leader.

This gives him a massive advantage over Trump, who has a maximum of eight years, and means Kim can play the long game.

"I think within the first minute - my touch, my feel, that's what I do", the president said, touting his deal-making experience as a businessman.

"If I think it won't happen, I'm not going to waste my time", he said.

Two separate photos from the Singaporean government and AFP show North Korean leader Kim Jong-un (L) and U.S. President Trump arriving in Singapore on June 10, ahead of their historic summit.

Kim's summit with Trump has captured intense global attention after a turn to diplomacy in recent months after serious fears of war a year ago amid North Korean nuclear and missile tests.

There's wild speculation about how Kim will perform on the world stage, although one question was answered Sunday: His grim-faced, well-muscled bodyguards marched alongside his armored limousine at one point in Singapore, just as they did when he met the South Korean leader in April. But his ruthlessness at home and a human rights record that United Nations investigators have described as "harrowing" have left many unconvinced about his sincerity.

Both leaders landed in Singapore on Sunday, joining the estimated 3,000 journalists expected to cover the summit, .

But rather than burn Trump and the U.S. on a bad deal for short-term benefits, Kim may actually look to embrace the United States to balance against China.

"Substantive and detailed meetings in #Singapore today as Ambassador Kim meets with #DPRK", Pompeo wrote in a Twitter post in which he included a photograph of the meeting between US Ambassador to the Philippines Sung Kim, North Korean Foreign Ministry senior official Choi Sun Hee and other delegates from both countries.

He said there are hundreds of experts in relevant fields working to make sure North Korea makes good on any promises.

If a deal on nuclear weapons is made, verification will also a big challenge.

But even asKim prepares to meet with Trump at a resort island in the tiny city-state, he has a phalanx of loyalists and hardliners watching from home, waiting to see what he agrees to before returning to North Korea.

Recently, Trump himself tried to lower expectations for the talks in Singapore.

Plans for the meeting almost foundered after Trump abruptly withdrew in May, citing North Korea's "open hostility" during negotiations.

"Wouldn't it be wonderful if we walked out and everything was settled all of a sudden from sitting down for a couple of hours?"

Ahead of the meeting, Trump has dangled the carrot of a normalisation of diplomatic ties between the former foes and even a White House visit for Kim, which would confirm his arrival on the world stage.
