Hurricane Bud is weakening, could hit Mexico as tropical storm

Bud is the second Pacific Ocean hurricane of the season, following Tropical Storm Aletta, which is weakening after veering well away from land.

As of the Tuesday morning advisory, winds were up to 130 miles per hour making Bud a major category 4 hurricane.

With maximum sustained winds of 75 miles (121 km) per hour and gusts of 93 miles (150 km) per hour, Bud was moving northwest at 9.3 miles (15 km) per hour.

Beyond that, the remnants of Bud should bring welcome rain to the parched and fire-ravaged Southwest U.S., potentially bringing the first in three months to cities such as Phoenix and Tucson. The storm peaked on Friday as a Category 4 hurricane with winds of 140 miles per hour. This heavy rain could cause life-threatening flash flooding and mudslides, especially in high-terrain areas. A tropical storm watch has been posted for portions of Mexico's west coast. Business owners in Los Cabos have been advised to to monitor the progress of Bud throughout the week.

Forecasters said the hurricane's eyewall, which contains its strongest winds, will remain far off the southwest Mexican coast but outer rainbands will continue to wrap ashore over southwest Mexico over the next few days.
