US ready for North Korea nuclear crisis if talks fail

In March, Mr Trump shocked the world by accepting an invitation from Mr Kim to meet in person.

U.S. and North Korean officials huddled at Singapore's Ritz Carlton Hotel on Monday ahead of the sit-down.

Kim and Trump arrived in Singapore hours apart on Sunday for their much-anticipated meeting Tuesday to discuss the regime's nuclear arsenal.

Rodman said he hopes everyone reads it before the summit and reiterated that "we've got the greatest negotiator of all time" to "show the world how it's done".

"Prime Minister Lee complimented the bold and admirable decision by Chairman Kim and President of the United States Donald Trump to come together for this Summit".

The White House said in a statement that the talks with North Korea are moving "more quickly than expected", without mentioning specifics.

It wasn't immediately clear what specific progress, if any, had been made in preliminary discussions between US and North Korean officials in the run-up to the Tuesday summit.

The president planned to stop in Guam and Hawaii on his way back to Washington.

It is an outcome that seemed unimaginable less than a year ago - when Mr Trump and Mr Kim exchanged streams of fiery insults - and North Korea conducted several ballistic missile tests in defiance of the worldwide community. Trump has described Tuesday's meeting as the start of a process and meant for the two leaders to get to know each other.

Just meeting with Trump will also give Kim recognition as the leader of a "normal" country and as an equal of the USA leader. He said there are hundreds of experts in relevant fields working to make sure North Korea makes good on any promises.

The air of uncertainty was confirmed by Trump himself.

Kim's repressive regime largely maintains its power via a brutal system of prison camps in which hundreds of thousands of people are now detained, even for crimes as small as accessing foreign information through a radio or gossiping about the state.

In a sign of lingering tensions, the North Koreans have been closely scrutinizing all American staffers who are slated to be in any U.S. The Worm has visited North Korea on multiple occasions and competed on Celebrity Apprentice in 2013. Or, it could amount to little more than a much-photographed handshake.

Kim smiled as he took a selfie with Singapore's Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan at the scenic waterfront Gardens by the Bay.

But North Korea now deems itself "a nuclear state", and insists the U.S. must end its "nuclear threats and blackmail" as a precondition for denuclearization, according to a statement last month from First Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Kim Kye Gwan. Trump said last week that Rodman had not been invited to the summit.

As he was trying to build a bridge with Kim, he was smashing longtime alliances with Western allies with his abrasive performance at the G-7.

But he added: "In the end, that doesn't matter".

Pompeo did everything he could to avoid even saying the word Canada.

On the summit's eve, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo drew a firm line, saying the U.S. plans to keep sanctions in place until North Korea eliminates its nuclear weapons capability.

Previous attempts to negotiate with Pyongyang have failed, but earlier this year North Korea demonstrated a new openness to diplomacy and held direct talks with Seoul.

He wouldn't say whether Trump would consider withdrawing US troops from the Korean Peninsula, but insisted USA sanctions on the North would remain in place until the North denuclearizes.
