Americans are thanking Canada to show their support for Trudeau

WASHINGTON-A senior adviser to U.S. President Donald Trump has apologized for saying there is a "special place in hell" for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. "I own that, that was my mistake, my words", he said at a Journal conference.

He had said there was a "special place in hell" for Mr Trudeau for going against US President Donald Trump.

At a news conference after his meeting with Mr Kim, the President said the Canadian leader must not have realised that Mr Trump had televisions on Air Force One, allowing him to monitor Mr Trudeau's news conference at the end of the G7 summit.

Trump called Trudeau "dishonest" and "weak" in tweets following the summit on Saturday.

"And that's what bad faith Justin Trudeau did with that stunt press conference", he said.

On Tuesday, Trump kept up the attack on Trudeau. In tweets, Trump insulted Trudeau as "dishonest" and "weak".

Canadian lawmakers unanimously voted to oppose the U.S.' "illegitimate tariffs" on Canadian steel and aluminum and condemned disparaging statements made by the Trump administration about Canada.

The White House's chief economic adviser, Larry Kudlow, similarly told CNN on Sunday that Trudeau "really kind of stabbed us in the back".

Mr Trudeau said he had reiterated to Mr Trump, who left the G7 meeting before it ended, that tariffs would harm industries and workers on both sides of the US-Canada border. "Using that type of language is not professional, it's not called for, and I tell you, I was deeply disappointed to see this lack of professionalism on his part". "He'll learn, he can't do that", Trump said.

The comments came after Mr Trudeau vowed to impose retaliatory measures in response to Mr Trump's trade tariffs. "We just shook hands!"' Mr Trump said.

Trump gave a wide-ranging news conference in Singapore on Tuesday following his landmark summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, in which the two leaders spoke for several hours. "That's going to cost him a lot of money".

He said Trump agreed with the fairly generic trade language in the communique drafted by the G7 leaders, who are traditionally America's closet allies.

Freeland said she had a "good conversation" Sunday with US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, and that the pair would try to meet in Washington this week. "And I think what people need to do at this moment is take a step back", Hassett said.

Canada, she said, is still seeking a "win-win-win" NAFTA deal, while adding that Ottawa will remain "absolutely resolute in defense of the national interest". Let us know what you think by voting in the poll above and sharing your thoughts in the comment section below.

The US has slapped a 25% tariff on imports of steel and 10% on aluminium from countries including the United Kingdom and the rest of the European Union.
