Japan warns US-South Korea drills 'vital'

This is an OZY Special Briefing, an extension of the Presidential Daily Brief. Each one serves up an interesting selection of facts, opinions, images and videos in order to catch you up and vault you ahead. The two men met in a carefully choreographed summit at a Singapore hotel that featured flags, red carpeting and a 13-second handshake before the cameras.

It said that Kim and Trump had "shared recognition to the effect that it is important to abide by the principle of step-by-step and simultaneous action in achieving peace, stability and denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula". The country has one of the lowest levels of foreign exchange and the country charges tourists and visiting journalists in US Dollars.

Why does it matter? "We also hope that the resolution of the Korean Peninsula issue will take into account and address our concerns about proliferation linkages extending to India's neighbourhood", a statement issued by the MEA said.

It also did not mention points raised later by Mr Trump around the abduction of Japanese citizens, human rights abuses or the withdrawal of USA troops.

Trump initially rejected the proposal, in which North Korea would stop conducting nuclear and missile tests in exchange for a halt in military exercise between the US and South Korea.

"China is very concerned about the United States making use of North Korea as a strategic balancer in this region to hedge against the rise of China".

North Korea has long criticized the joint drills as rehearsals for invasion and used them to justify the building-up of its nuclear weapons program.

The straight-faced Prime Minister replied grumpily: 'Well, there aren't any American troops in North Korea'.

President Trump didn't, however, agree to lift or relax economic sanctions on North Korea - something the Obama administration did for Iran. "In the micro sense, it's about the families whose loved ones fought and died and have remained in North Korea".

Some experts have criticized proposals for a step-by-step approach as a mere ploy by Pyongyang to win concessions while delaying disarmament.

Negotiators scramble to put something together for Trump and Kim
The two leaders have had an extraordinary up-and-down relationship over the past 18 months. But after some diplomatic scrambling, the two leaders will now sit down together.

Yu said that if the talks lead to a decreased nuclear threat from North Korea - the goal for US military officials being stationed in the region - then pulling USA troops should be on the table.

Now there are atleast 13 internationally recognized economic sanctions against trade, investment and transactions with North Korean government or citizens in effect.

"Trump meeting Kim is a huge risk from China's perspective".

"We find it unlikely there will be any other impact on the dry bulk market in the near term", said William Tooth, analyst at Maritime Strategies International.

Kim's hand in the deal has been forced by the country's struggling economy, with North Korea short both grain and crude oil.

"The president is the president of the United States". Two unpredictable leaders, who knows where it's going to go? It's an illustration that ... DPRK is the abbreviation for the North's official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

"They have great beaches".

"At this current point, there is a need to discern the exact meaning and intent of President Trump's comments", Seoul's Defense Ministry said, Twin Cities Pioneer Press reported.
