Sony Issues Statement Regarding Fortnite Cross-Platform Play on PS4

We also offer "Fortnite" cross-play support with PC, Mac, iOS, and Android devices, expanding the opportunity for "Fortnite' fans on PS4 to play with even more gamers on other platforms".

Epic Games has also allowed for a collection of "cross-play" options between platforms, with Xbox players being able to team up with those on PC and a variety of other examples, however, users on PlayStation have only been able to play with or against those on PC.

Whether this means that loot boxes or a similar mechanic will find their way into upcoming Switch titles is something we'll see, but Nintendo isn't certainly isn't averse to the idea. If you were hoping for a quick change in policy on Sony's end, or at least an apology for the inconvenience, the message given to the BBC by a Sony spokesperson unfortunately did not deliver in either regard. And less than 24 hours after it was released for the Nintendo Switch, another 2 million people downloaded it.

Of course, there are other, more reasonable explanations for not supporting cross-platform play on certain devices.

Not only did Sony did not acknowledge the hottest console out there, which happens to be the Switch right now, but it also did not provide any insight into what would make cross-play impossible between the PS4 and the Switch.

Something tells me that when a large portion of the 125 million players come knocking at your door, you'll need to think of something to add.

When Nintendo announced a Switch version of the title this week during E3, players soon found out that if they had logged into their Epic Games account on a PlayStation 4, they couldn't bring their progress and purchases with them to the Switch. The incompatibility works in reverse as well-Epic accounts previously associated with the Switch or Xbox One can't be used on the PS4 version. People are getting locked out of their stuff on a platform that uses the slogan "this is for the players". This was before anyone was making an Epic account for Fortnite and just a few months after the launch of the Switch, so I was primarily asking him about cross-platform multiplayer. The bigger problem comes from the fact that once you visit and log in Sony's island you can't leave.

Nintendo said the game can be played on-the-go or at home, per the Switch's main functionality as a portaable or a TV-based game console. "Fortnite is already a huge hit with PS4 fans, offering a true free-to-play experience so gamers can jump in and play online".

That's a great response to a question nobody asked.
