U.S. politicians not yet toasting Trump-Kim summit

After the summit, Trump and Kim pledged to work toward complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula while Washington committed to providing security guarantees for its old enemy.

After signing essentially an agreement-in-principle for North Korea to denuclearize in return for the USA cancelling joint exercises with the South Korean military, President Trump said it was because of Otto Warmbier.

Trump cast the decision as a cost-saving measure, but also called the exercises "inappropriate" while talks continue. The language in the joint statement was weaker than in previous agreements - the very significant difference being that the North is now much further advanced in its nuclear programme. -North Korea summit proved that diplomacy was the right path to follow.

As Trump took a victory lap on the world stage, experts and allies struggled to account for what Trump and Kim had agreed to - and whether this agreement could actually be the first of its kind not to be broken by the North Koreans.

The Massachusetts Democrat, who has been one of the most outspoken critics of the Trump administration, said that "success will be judged on whether it can eliminate Kim's nuclear weapons and verify they are gone". If nothing else happens, Schumer said the meeting amounts to "purely a reality show summit".

The summit capped a dizzying few days of foreign policy activity for Trump, who shocked US allies over the weekend by using a meeting in Canada of the Group of Seven industrialized economies to alienate America's closest friends in the West. Lashing out over trade practices, Trump lobbed insults at his G-7 host, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

The optimistic summit was a remarkable change in dynamics from less than a year ago, when Trump was threatening "fire and fury" against Kim, who in turn scorned the American president as a "mentally deranged US dotard". -South Korea alliance is the US troops stationed in South Korea and the joint U.S.
