More than 75 former US attorneys are calling on Attorney General Jeff Sessions to stop family separations, saying the decision to implement a policy that has led to more than 2,000 children taken from their parents "falls squarely on your shoulders".

"Family separation causes deep suffering among the entire family, but children stand to be the most impacted".

In an open letter to Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen the state officials said the policy is "inhumane" and "contrary to American values". If a person doesn't arrive at an appropriate port of entry to claim asylum, the crossing is deemed illegal and prosecuted even if the person does not have a criminal history.

Fox News host Laura Ingraham asked the nation's chief law enforcement officer to respond to his critics' comparisons between Nazi German's treatment of Jews, and the facilities where the federal government is housing children separated from their parents. Sen.

The administration's family separation policy has caused outrage across the political spectrum, but many members of the president's party remain silent on the issue, including eight of the nine Michigan Republican Representatives: Jack Bergman (MI-1), Bill Huizinga (MI-2), John Moolenaar (MI-4), Fred Upton (MI-6), Tim Walberg (MI-7), Mike Bishop (MI-8), Paul Mitchell (MI-10), and Dave Trott (MI-11).

He addressed the controversial zero-tolerance policy, saying the USA will not encourage people to come to the country illegally by releasing them into the country.

At the White House on Monday, DHS Secretary Nielsen defended the policy and said "loopholes" in the current system were driving people to attempt to come to the U.S.

Sessions criticized the Obama administration when parents who separated themselves from their children by sending them on their own or with human trafficking operations to the U.S./Mexico border. And: "I hate the children being taken away".

In the letter, the attorneys general argue that the policy of separation is not in the best interest of the children who end up at the border. It was focused on freeing and otherwise helping children who come to the border without a parent or guardian.

"As former U.S. Attorneys, we know that none of these consequences ― nor the policy itself ― is required by law", they wrote in their letter to Sessions. "As a result, she must resign", Kamala Harris (D-California) said.

"The stories from the border make me ill".

"We have watched what happened with the Obama policies, and over years, we went from 15,000 illegal entries to 75,000", Sessions said.
