Volkswagen electric car sets Pikes Peak record

These changes include race seating in the front, removal of the rear seating, the addition of a roll cage, and the addition of a fire suppression system. R Pikes Peak received a sporting seal of approval from the outset, which it more than earned on its record-breaking run, if not before.

"What an incredible machine".

Bentley's Pikes Peak Bentayga was a bog standard auto with just the addition of regulation safety kit, but its 600bhp, adaptive suspension, electric 48V anti-roll control and carbon ceramic brakes conspired to crush the previous record by almost two minutes, setting a time of 10:49.9 and averaging 66.5mph through Pikes Peak's 12.42 mile, 156 turn climb. Created and handcrafted by Mulliner - Bentley's in-house bespoke and coachbuilding division - the Pikes Peak Bentayga is an homage to the achievements of the Bentayga W12 on the mountain. All exterior chrome is replaced with gloss black as standard, with additional carbon fiber on the splitter, side skirts, diffuser and rear spoiler. Subtle Pikes Peak motifs are seen on the front fenders.

The colour scheme continues inside, only with the Radium replaced by Key Lime highlights on the Beluga leather. The wheel and gear lever are trimmed in Alcantara, and there's a Pikes Peak logo on the dashboard trim piece, lest you forget the inspiration for this special edition. The vehicle gets a Pikes Peak logo on its carbonfibre fascia and numbered treadplates.

"This record proves the outstanding dynamic ability of the Bentayga - demonstrating again how Bentley Motors is the only automotive company in the world that can combine pinnacle luxury and breathtaking performance". It produces 600bhp and 664lb ft of torque, and drives all four wheels via a ZF eight-speed automatic gearbox. A 600-horsepower 6.0-liter twin-turbo W-12 engine powers both SUVs, and both sport an identical suspension setup featuring adaptive air springs at each corner and 48-volt electric active anti-roll bars that keep this big beast flat through corners. Order books will open in August for USA and European customers.
