Artificial intelligence robot launched to ISS from US

The spacecraft is expected to return in August later this year, on its return the spacecraft will carry back around 1,724 kilograms of research hardware and other disposed of crew supplies. Powered with voice-assisted AI, CIMON can even remember and identify astronauts in the space station. Measuring 32cm across and tipping the scales at 5kg, it's essentially astronauts' flight attendant and assistance system.

And CIMON has trained some time on Earth with German astronaut Alexander Gerst, who is already on the ISS board.

"CIMON is created to support astronauts in performing routine work, for example, by displaying procedures or - thanks to its "neural" AI network and its ability to learn - offering solutions to problems", Airbus explained in a news release.

CIMON will deploy a range of IBM Watson artificial intelligence, including computer vision and various forms of natural language processing.

Astronauts repaired the arm's current hand - which was growing arthritic after 17 years of use - during a series of spacewalks in recent months.

"We have implemented this experiment in a very short time". "Thanks to this fully voice-controlled access to documents and media, the astronaut can conveniently navigate through operating and fix instructions and procedures for experiments and equipment".

CIMON is among 2,600 kg of cargo that was launched to the International Space Station on Friday, atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

Crew members will be able to correspond with CIMON via voice commands and access a database of procedures.

It is scheduled to reach the station on Monday.

Mounted atop the Dragon is about 3 tons of supplies, more than half of which is scientific gear, the most exciting arguably being the transportation of CIMON, the space agency's Crew Interactive Mobile Companion that uses artificial intelligence to support astronauts aboard the station.

The Dragon's 5,900 pounds of cargo will include Ecostress, developed in Pasadena at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which measures the temperature of plants to better understand how much water they need in space and how they respond to stress.
