Heat warnings are issued when very high temperature or humidity conditions are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion.

However, daytime highs are still expected to be in the low 30s, with humidex values possibly reaching the low 40s.

"As the heat wave continues, it's clear we expect the number of deaths attributable to the heat to rise", she said.

Toronto Public Health, meanwhile, has extended its heat warning for the city.

Along with the deaths in Montreal, four deaths are under investigation in the Estrie region to determine if they are related to the extreme temperatures, according to authorities.

A blanket of steamy, hot air has gripped Quebec and much of central and eastern Canada since Saturday.

The City of Toronto has also extended the hours at eight outdoor pools to help residents cope with the heart.

People at risk of heat-related illnesses include those with chronic illnesses, people with limited mobility or certain mental health illnesses, infants and young children, people on certain medications, and the homeless.
