Apple Doesn’t Want Intel Inside 5G iPhones

Intel hasn't given up hope, and it wants to improve Sunny Peak modems for the 2022 iPhones, the report said.

Now that Apple has dropped out, it seems Intel sees no future for its Sunny Peak chip.

Sunny Peak was reportedly a chip that would have combined 5G, LTE, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth radios together.

However, a new report suggests that Intel won't be getting Apple's business with regards to the next-generation 5G modem chips. At least not for iPhones with 5G. Because it supports the notion that politics may have put Apple in a position to temporarily back-off supporting an Intel modem due to their war with Qualcomm.

Citing Intel internal communications, Stoler relates that Intel managers discussing Apple having told them it won't use a specific Intel part code-named "Sunny Peak". At the same time, though, heavyweight Qualcomm has been crowing of its growing 5G traction-Qualcomm in February said more than a dozen handset makers around the world have selected its Snapdragon X50 5G NR modem to power their forthcoming 5G phones, an announcement the company argued gives it a 12- to 18-month lead on its competitors in the 5G arena.

Trump holds campaign rally in Montana
When the president hits the stage Thursday in Great Falls, Montana, it likely won't be your average Donald Trump political rally. Trump vowed that he'll be prepared for the July 16 summit in Finland, saying "I've been preparing for this stuff my whole life".

However, following the publication of the report, Intel denied it has changed its 5G plans. The Cupertino company was supposed to be the primary customer for the unified chip that is internally known as "Sunny Peak".

Although 5G chips in smartphones will be available in 2019, network adaptation is a bit slower, so large-scale rollout of gigabit speeds is expected in 2020.

If Apple makes good on both plans, Intel could be in for a real bruisin'.

Intel hasn't confirmed whether or not it'll be supplying Apple with 5G hardware, but it wouldn't come as a surprise if it had been ditched, given that Apple is also said to be moving away from Intel chips in its Mac lineup in favour of its own custom ARM-based chips.

Apple was, and continues to be, the most critical smartphone maker to any component manufacturer, Intel included.
