Samsung has all but confirmed its Galaxy Note 9 launch on August 9 with the Korean company saying, "Samsung Electronics will welcome a new member to the premium Galaxy family".

Smartphone sales started to cool a year ago after a decade of robust growth, but Samsung had managed to weather the slowdown, thanks to demand for memory.

"It's a bit disappointing", Ko Gyeong-beom at Yuanta Securities Korea told AFP, noting the company had posted expectation-beating operating profits for several quarters. Sales of organic light-emitting diode screens to Apple Inc. have also been weaker than expected, while the growth of semiconductor prices has been slowing.

Sales are estimated at 58 trillion won, down 4.9 percent from 61 trillion won a year earlier. "While chips and phones cancel each other out in profit, the weakening won may work in Samsung's favor in the second half".

Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin could meet without aides, Kremlin says
Putin is known as a shrewd negotiator who some officials worry could exploit such a session and extract concessions from Trump. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said yesterday that Putin and Trump may meet one-on-one during their summit in Helsinki .

Samsung hasn't commented, but back in April warned that its mobile business would see "stagnant sales of flagship models amid weak demand and an increase in marketing expenses" in the second quarter. The guidance, released Wednesday ahead of full earnings later this month, didn't provide specific divisional results. This is a way for the South Korean phone maker to gauge the marketability of the device.

The outlook for chips remains upbeat, with production of Apple's next iPhone likely to support NAND flash memory prices after they fell by up to 15 percent in the second quarter, according to chip price tracker DRAMeXchange.

There are also fears that a Chinese price-fixing probe into chipmakers including Samsung could limit the upside for DRAM prices, as China is the largest importer of memory products.
