Tropical depression likely to form off North Carolina coast

Beryl, which was upgraded to hurricane from a tropical storm early Friday, is now moving over the Atlantic, toward the Lesser Antilles. Hurricane Beryl is moving west at around 14mph with maximum sustained winds of around 75mph with higher gusts.

Since Beryl is a compact storm, hurricane-force winds are extending only up to 10 miles from the center of the storm and tropical storm force winds are extending 35 miles from the center. It will most likely return to its tropical storm status by late Sunday or Monday as it approaches the Lesser Antilles.

- The first hurricane of the 2018 season has formed, but it's not expected to hold its strength for too long. However, the shear will increase as the system moves toward the Lesser Antilles and is forecast to weaken. Temperatures will be in the 90's. If it does become a named storm, the next name on the list is Chris. But heavy rain and gusty wind could still hammer parts of the islands. The storm became a Category 1 hurricane while heading towards Puerto Rico, so get all the vital details.

People Are Still Missing After a Tourist Boat Capsized Off Thailand's Phuket
At least seven people are missing after two tourist boats capsized in the popular resort of Phuket in Thailand, police have said. Officials said the 39 Chinese and European tourists who were forced to abandon that boat were rescued and have returned to land.

As of noon on Friday, Beryl was packing maximum sustained winds of 80 miles per hour. On Friday morning, the hurricane was about 1,140 miles east-southeast of the Lesser Antilles where the BVI is located. Forecasters said there's a greater-than-usual uncertainty in the analysis of the storm's current intensity and in the forecasted intensity.

The official forecast track from the National Hurricane Center takes Beryl to the eastern Caribbean Sea over the weekend. Lojero also warned that the storm is expected to dump up to four inches (10 centimeters) of rain and could unleash landslides.
