Dana White confirms Brock Lesnar vs. Daniel Cormier will happen

UFC light heavyweight champions Daniel Cormier warms up backstage during the UFC 214 event inside the Honda Center on July 29, 2017 in Anaheim, California.

UFC 226 was a card littered with phenomenal fights from top to bottom, but it was the main event that really stole the show.

Our sister site Sherdog will be featuring the live results throughout the evening.

Conor McGregor held two belts at once in 2016, but those were the 145 lbs. and 155 lbs. titles. The two are scheduled to fight in a heavyweight title fight Saturday in Las Vegas. Now he gets a chance to do something Jones never has and that is rule the heavyweight division.

For all the talk about champion-vs. -champion bouts over the years in the UFC, their actual history is just two chapters long.

"This is the ultimate thing you can do in this sport", Cormier said.

The Spaniard served 60 percent for points and had 19 overall winners in the set while limiting the errors to just seven. In the men's event, 3rd seed and last year's runner-up Marin Cilic was knocked out by Argentina's Guido Pella .

But Cormier provided all the fireworks necessary with his demolition of Miocic, who had held the heavyweight belt for over two years.

Cormier, 39, and Lesnar are both accomplished amateur wrestlers who have often debated who would win a dream fight if they both stepped onto the mat or into the cage.

White said that Lesnar reached out a couple of days ago and apologized for "going dark" on him for a while.

"Yeah, we are definitely going to make that fight", White said. "Push me now, you go to sleep later". During his post-fight interview, he grabbed the microphone and called out Brock Lesnar. "Your day is in the past; 2010 is like the stone age". Could Brock Lesnar versus Daniel Cormier be the match that takes the UFC out of its slump? Lesnar must be in the pool again for six months before he is allowed to compete again with UFC, so if he has indeed re-entered that testing pool again, his return to UFC is most certainly on. "Even if I already know what's going to happen".

The night's heavyweight co-main event between contender Derrick Lewis and former title challenger Francis Ngannou was expected to deliver an exciting clash, and possibly an early knockout finish. Welterweight Mike Perry also earned a copiously bloody split-decision victory over Paul Felder. Featherweight champion Max Holloway was scheduled to defend his title against Brian Ortega, but Holloway dropped out Wednesday night with symptoms of an apparent concussion.
