Brendon Hartley: "I’m fine, but the auto definitely wasn’t!"

Brendon Hartley:

The red flag was immediately waved on the session and there was a 14-minute delay as marshals cleared the wreckage with Hartley's vehicle being craned away.

Hamilton and Raikkonen traded top spot in warm and sunny conditions at Silverstone on Saturday morning, with the Ferrari driver setting rapid laps, as he dipped into the 1:26s. The front wheel of his Toro Rosso auto skewed vertically and Hartley lost control of the vehicle.

Hartley's incident then saw Toro Rosso keep Pierre Gasly in the garage for the remainder of the session as it investigated what caused the failure, with work instantly taking place to inspect the front suspension on the other vehicle.

Raikkonen's team-mate, Sebastian Vettel, was fourth behind Valtteri Bottas in the other Mercedes ahead of what looks set to be a tightly matched qualifying later.

Hartley was able to walk away from the incident, but the severe damage to his Toro Rosso means he might miss qualifying. On top of that, the team faces a fix job to ensure Hartley's vehicle is ready for qualifying, which starts at 2pm local time.

Hamilton hits out at Ferrari's 'interesting tactics' after Kimi clash
He was 19th and last, Brendon Hartley having failed to start in his Toro Rosso. "I'll never give up". Hamilton rejoined in 18th and recovered to second, while Raikkonen ultimately finished third.

Gasly's early time, prior to Hartley's failure, left him 19th on the leaderboard.

Lewis Hamilton won pole position for the race.

When both returned to serious action on the soft tyre later on they were eventually split by just 0.006s and finished up not much more than a tenth faster than Leclerc's Sauber.

The Red Bulls of Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo rounded out the top six, but only after an unexpected challenge from the Sauber of star rookie Charles Leclerc.
