The cheap Surface-branded iPad rival you wanted is a Go

The 10-inch hybrid tablet is the newest entry in the Surface line and is essentially a smaller and less powerful version of the Surface Pro.

Featuring a 10-inch PixelSense display with a native resolution of 1800 x 1200, 3:2 aspect ratio, and support for the optional Surface Pen, the general design of Surface Go is not far off from the existing Surface Pro.

It looks like Microsoft is getting ready to introduce a new Surface device. Surface Go comes with 64GB eMMC and 128GB or 256GB SSD storage options. The company also may be adding an 8GB RAM/256GB SSD storage version (with and without LTE, ) to its Surface Go line-up.

So there's a 10in IPS screen (1200x1800) and an Intel Pentium 4415Y processor, a 1.6GHz "Gold" chip which sits at the bottom of the firm's 7th-gen Kaby Lake family.

The Surface Go runs on Windows 10, while the iPad features the latest version of iOS, and that is a profound difference in the experience. Microsoft promises the Surface Go can handle productivity apps like Office and casual apps like Spotify and Netflix. A specially designed Surface Go Signature Type Cover is said to offer ergonomic key pitch and exceptional key travel - alongside a Windows Precision Trackpad that supports five-point multi-finger gestures.

Microsoft opened a flagship store in Taipei on July 6, showcasing its Surface range and as part of Microsoft's strategy to target Taiwanese consumers, reported CNA. There's a USB-C port, so you can use your Android phone's charger to power the PC, though by default it charges using Microsoft's proprietary Surface connector. The Surface Go clocks off after nine - and that's the always-optimistic claim in the marketing blurb.

Bloomberg's sources say the planned device is a 10-inch tablet with a starting price around $400, iPad-like rounded corners, and a USB Type-C port among its inputs. The Microsoft Surface Go will cost customers $399 excluding Keyboard which will be priced at $99 or $129 (Alcantara).

And it will nearly certainly be announced tomorrow. Users can switch to regular Windows 10 Home, which doesn't have that limit, for free.

So who is the Surface Go for? The device will be shipped starting August 2.
