In addition to the expected fixes and improvements, iOS 11.4.1 brings over a feature that's called USB Restricted Mode, whose goal is to prevent those iPhone hacking machines that law enforcement is using to bypass the screen lock from hacking iOS devices.

The team of researchers at ElcomSoft have reiterated that once the USB Restricted Mode is enabled, it restricts all the data communications that occur over the Lightning port.

Importantly, this technique would only work if the iOS device is not already in USB Restricted Mode when captured. In a blog post he said a $39 device can "fool USB Restricted Mode".

Tap the switch next to USB Accessories under Allow Access When Locked to put it in the white "off" position (if it's not there already) if you want USB Restricted Mode activated. Apple has added protections against the USB devices being used by law enforcement and private companies that connect over Lightning to crack an iPhone's passcode and evade Apple's usual encryption safeguards.

It's worth noting that nobody has been able to hack USB Restricted Mode yet, once it's actually been an hour since you unlocked the phone.

However, ElcomSoft says that merely plugging in almost any device (not just ones that have previously been connected to that phone), such as Apple's Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter, will disable the timer.

iOS 12 may be the hottest iPhone operating system you can run right now, but that's still in beta. However, this doesn't mean that the USB connectivity with an Apple device is entirely safe.

However, if you aren't actually happy with the release, and you want to go back to an earlier version of iOS, then be aware that Apple is now only signing iOS 11.4, which means that you will only be able to downgrade to iOS 11.4.

Battery drain is not listed among the bugs iOS 11.4.1 addresses.

Apple also today released security updates for. The only way for Apple to now fix this flaw would be to require authentication of all iPhone accessories, but this likely won't happen anytime soon. Another user having similar issues claims that the iPhone was updated to iOS 11.4, charged to 100%, rebooted and left in standby for four hours.

Over the past year or so, we've seen more companies develop ways to unlock locked iPhones for law enforcement, and chances are we would've seen more in the future unless Apple took steps to address this issue.
