The series had been expected to dominate the acting races among the limited series and TV movies - and indeed it did, with Darren Criss, Penelope Cruz, Edgar Ramirez and Ricky Martin all nominated.

Game of Thrones leads this year's pack of Emmy nominees with 22 nods overall, including for Outstanding Drama Series.

The most self-aware Emmy hopeful, Megan Amram's "An Emmy for Megan", achieved its goal with a nomination in the short form comedy or drama category.

Other streaming services also received nominations for their originals, including Hulu with 27 nominations, with The Handmaid's Tale defending its Best Drama award this year.

As expected, hits like "Game of Thrones", "Westworld", "Stranger Things", "This Is Us" and "The Handmaid's Tale", last year's big victor, earned multiple nods in the drama categories.

"GLOW" star Alison Brie wasn't nominated for her work on the Netflix series, in which she plays a struggling actress who joins a TV show focusing on women's wrestling.

Lead actor in a drama series: Jason Bateman (Ozark); Sterling K Brown (This Is Us); Ed Harris (Westworld); Matthew Rhys (The Americans); Milo Ventimiglia (This Is Us); and Jeffrey Wright (Westworld). And HBO's "Barry" made a significant mark on the comedy voting, where Donald Glover's "Atlanta" led the way, in a field thrown wide open by the absence of three-time champ "Veep" from this year's list of contenders.
