Angelique Kerber stuns Serena Williams to win Wimbledon title

Angelique Kerber became the first German player since Steffi Graf in 1996 to lift the Wimbledon title, beating seven-times victor Serena Williams 6-3 6-3.

Meghan last watched her friend in 2016, and may have sat on the same court as her future sister-in-law, as Catherine and William also attended that year.

She prevented Williams from claiming an eighth title at Wimbledon and 24th from all Grand Slam tournaments, which would have equaled Margaret Court's record.

Tennis champion Serena Williams has lost the Wimbledon Ladies' final. She has added a more aggressive element to her game in recent years.

"I mean, even this week, I had a pain in my leg, and I went to the worst-case scenario: 'Oh, my God, I have a (pulmonary embolism) in my leg, '" Williams said.

"Being here and having an opportunity to play is super great for me". Knowing that no matter what happens, I have unbelievable support and unconditional love.

PH lauds Thailand for daring cave rescue of boys soccer team
The team's morale was hit when a former Thai Navy SEAL, Samarn Kunan, 38, died while helping lay out oxygen tanks underground. The rescue took more than two weeks. "If the kids didn't have Coach Ake, I don't know how they could have survived".

And it will be no surprise who one of the royals will be cheering on - although she may need to hold back on the celebrations this time. It's worth repeating. Williams has made a habit of making the seemingly impossible possible during her career, so perhaps it's easy to underestimate the difficulty of what she's achieved by reaching the final.

I have so much to look forward to. It's also her first so I know she'll enjoy it.

"To all the moms out there, I was playing for you today - and I tried", said the 36-year-old American, her voice shaking during the trophy ceremony.

The 23 time Grand Slam champion needed her rocky serve to stay in the match, but she failed to create enough chances as Kerber in the opening set put 62% of returns in.

Following another two months away from competition, she entered the French Open in late May, and won three matches before pulling out before the fourth round because of an injured pectoral muscle.

Germany's Angelique Kerber poses with the winner's trophy, the Venus Rosewater Dish, after her women's singles final victory over U.S. player Serena Williams.
