Hurricane Chris weakens but still speeding

Environment Canada meteorologist Ian Hubbard said the storm was off the coast of Carolina on Tuesday and was expected to intensify as it started moving northeast later in the day.

Tropical Storm Chris officially became a hurricane Tuesday as it continues to move away from the Carolina coast and head northeast towards Canada at 10 miles per hour, the National Hurricane Center says.

Beryl is not expected to track close enough to the USA coast to bring significant rain or wind, AccuWeather hurricane expert Dan Kottlowski said.

Hurricane Chris continues to be a solid Category 2 late Wednesday morning after rapidly intensifying last night. However by Thursday, it should begin to weaken and will likely become a strong post-tropical cyclone by early Friday.

The final set alone lasted two hours and 50 minutes. "At the end you feel like this is a draw between the two of us". It was the third longest match in tennis history and the second-longest match Wimbledon has ever hosted.

The system Chris will merge with will continue north above the Arctic Circle next week. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 40 miles (65 kilometers) from the center, and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 175 miles (280 kilometers).

The National Hurricane Center forecast keeps the storm close to the NC coast through Tuesday, before it gets picked up and taken out to sea on Wednesday. Atlantic Canada residents are being warned these conditions could cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.

As for the tropics, Chris strengthened into a hurricane Tuesday evening, but still poses NO threat to the USA coastline and will move northeast and out to sea in the coming days. Local officials were preparing to deal with any minor flooding or overwash.

Forecasters are also closely watching remnants of Beryl in the North Atlantic as environmental conditions could become favourable for redevelopment over the next several days.
