Man charged after police said he fired at officers in South Shore

Few details of the shooting were available other than a police statement which said that about 5:30 p.m. foot patrol officers saw a man "exhibiting the characteristics of an armed person".

Nearly immediately after the shooting, a crowd of onlookers and activists descended on the scene. Chicago ABC station WLS captured video of protesters pushing and shoving back and forth with police officers.

"I know that they're very passionate about things that happen in the community, especially when it's dealing with police, but it got a little bit out of hand", Waller said.

The official statement from the Chicago police said, "an armed confrontation ensued resulting in an officer discharging his weapon and fatally striking the offender", adding that they recovered a "gun and two ammunition magazines" at the scene.

The Chicago Sun-Times says scuffles broke out between protesters and police officers holding batons who had cordoned off the area.

The man, thought to be in his 30s, was pronounced dead at Jackson Park Hospital, CFD spokesman Larry Merritt said.

At some point during the confrontation, the unidentified man was shot, police said.

Daoud Shiha, a spokesman of the movement, speaking to Anadolu Agency said the cease-fire came into force by 8.00 p.m. local time. The Gaza Health Ministry said the two, 15 and 16, died when the building they were standing near was hit.

Chief Waller told reporters that the crowd became combative, throwing bottles and jumping on top of a squad auto.

Chicago has a troubled history of police shootings.

After nightfall, protesters continued to mill around the neighbourhood with police occasionally chasing them away.

A black man was killed by police in Chicago, immediately drawing an angry crowd that began pushing police at the scene, reports the Chicago Sun Times.

As protesters gathered earlier, one protester used a megaphone to yell out the names of other people who had been fatally shot by Chicago police, including 17-year-old Laquan McDonald.

Three officers sustained minor injuries and there were four arrests. McDonald's death led to the ouster of the police chief and a series of reforms created to prevent future police abuses and to hold officers accountable for excesses.
