Nancy Sinatra Senior, Frank's first wife, dies aged 101

The first wife of Frank Sinatra, Nancy Sinatra Sr has sadly passed away at the age of 101.

Breaking the news on Twitter, Nancy Jr., wrote: 'My mother passed away peacefully tonight at the age of 101.

Nancy Barbato and Frank Sinatra were high school sweethearts.

Born Nancy Barbato, the first of Frank's first wives met the singer back in 1934 at the New Jersey holiday resort of Long Branch, and just months later they were engaged.

In 1950, humiliated by reports in the press of Frank's affair with screen siren Ava Gardner, Nancy filed for separation and their divorce was finalized in 1951.

They married on February 4 1939.

"Nancy was giving herself a manicure on the front porch when Frank came over with his ukulele and began to serenade her", according to an account on Sinatra's website.

In December 1963, the Sinatras went through a scare when their 19-year-old son Frank Jr was kidnapped from a Lake Tahoe hotel and held for $240,000 ransom.

"Godspeed, Momma and thank you for everything you did for us and for the world".

When Sinatra shot to fame in the 1940s, the couple relocated to Los Angeles, where their youngest daughter Tina Sinatra was born.

Sinatra divorced Gardner two years later, and went on to marry Mia Farrow and then Barbara Marx.

She also remained friendly with her ex-husband, who is said to have put in requests over the years for pasta and other Italian food dishes she was known to be an expert at preparing.

Nancy, who never remarried, later became known as Nancy Sr after daughter Nancy became a 1960s singing star in her own right.
