Chicago police release body camera footage of shooting that sparked violent protests

The suspect was identified by authorities as Harith Augustus, 37, a barber in the city's South Shore neighborhood who was shot by police early Saturday evening not far from where he worked. As Augustus breaks away and runs into the street, he appears to be struggling to withdraw something from his waistband. The civil rights leader called for video to be released of Saturday's shooting and referenced footage showing a white officer shooting black 17-year-old Laquan McDonald 16 times in 2014. Neighbors claimed Augustus had a hide carry license and wasn't doing anything wrong, although officers said that is not true.

Witness Gloria Rainge told the Chicago Sun-Times that officers instructed the victim not to sell loose cigarettes, which he denied doing.

Residents angry about the shooting clashed with police, and some in the crowd threw rocks and bottles at officers, who struck protesters with their batons.

He said Augustus' family were in favour of releasing the video for the same reason. "The police department gets no joy in these type of incidents.it's not something that they plan to do".

In this case, it doesn't help the police narrative that some community residents claim Augustus had a permit to carry a concealed weapon, and it was not immediately refuted. The officers then approached the man who, according to Waller, "became combative" and "appeared to be reaching for a weapon" whereupon he was shot by the police.

A Chicago Police Department spokesman tweeted video from a body-worn camera of an officer involved in the shooting. Johnson says police stopped Augustus when an officer noticed a gun in a holster peeking out from under the man's T-shirt.

The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative duties for 30 days, according to CPD officials. He would not name the officer who shot Augustus.

Augustus died of multiple gunshot wounds, medical examiners said. Hours after the shooting, dozens of people gathered to protest the man's death.

Randale Truitt, 31, of the 200 block of East 70th Street, is charged with attempted first-degree murder.

Chicago's Civilian Office of Police Accountability say the shooting was captured by body cameras and the circumstances surrounding the shooting are under investigation. The teen's death led to the police chief being ousted and a series of reforms aimed at preventing future police abuses and to hold officers accountable.
