Sen. Rand Paul Shrugs At Russian Election Interference: 'We All Do It'

CBS This Morning rolled out more of Jeff Glor's surprise sit-down with President Donald Trump, conducted before Trump's meeting today with Russian ruler Vladimir Putin.

Mr. Putin, basking in congratulations from Mr. Trump and other world leaders on the successful staging of the World Cup in Russian Federation, said: "The time has come to talk in a substantive way about our relations and problem areas of the world".

Trump made the startling claim ahead of his first, high-risk summit with Putin in Helsinki.

"Our relationship with Russian Federation has NEVER been worse thanks to many years of US foolishness and stupidity", Trump tweeted on Monday morning.

Standing alongside Putin, Trump steered clear of any confrontation with the Russian, going so far as to question American intelligence and last week's federal indictments that accused 12 Russians of hacking into Democratic email accounts to hurt Hillary Clinton in 2016.

Putin, basking in congratulations from Trump and other world leaders for the successful staging of the World Cup, said: "The time has come to talk in a substantive way about our relations and problem areas of the world".

The summit, which was being closely monitored by rattled world capitals, was condemned in advance by members of Congress from both parties after the US indictment last week of 12 Russian military intelligence officers accused of hacking Democrats in the 2016 election to help Trump's presidential campaign. We have 90 percent of the nuclear and that's not a good thing, it's not a bad thing. In the brightest worldwide spotlight side by side with the foreign leader he has most admired for his toughness, Donald Trump looked weak and submissive, incapable of expressing any sort of righteous indignation at even the most blatant bad behavior by Russian Federation.

"I think really we mistake our response if we think it's about accountability from the Russians", Paul told CNN's Jake Tapper.

"The Russians aren't done", she said at a book signing late a year ago.

Putin looked serious but smirked when journalists asked Trump about Russian meddling in the United States presidential campaign.

But Trump has insisted it is "a good thing to meet", as he attempts to replicate with Putin the sort of personal rapport he proclaims with the autocratic leaders of China and North Korea. Trump, hours before the indictment was made public, complained about the Russian Federation investigation hours, saying the "stupidity" was making it "very hard to do something with Russian Federation".

"If it were me, I'd check the soccer ball for listening devices and never allow it in the White House", Graham said.

Trump and Putin are meeting one-on-one with only interpreters present before wider talks involving aides.

He shook Putin's hand and ignored shouted questions about election interference.

But the United States leader would not say whether he would demand the extradition of 12 Russian intelligence officers who were indicted last week by U.S. special prosecutor Robert Mueller.

Trump also said he's confident Washington and Moscow can improve relations and said a friendly and productive relationship is "a good thing". Trump did not respond; Putin appeared to smirk. "We will be talking a little bit about China, our mutual friend, President Xi", Trump was quoted as saying by ANI. "I will say this". She connected with politicians and candidates and even went to National Prayer Breakfasts, all under the direction of a high-level Russian official who was sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department in April, The Associated Press reports. Russian Federation was kicked out of the group in 2014 in response to its illegal annexation of Crimea.

But the USA leader insisted that the Kremlin chief had delivered a "powerful" denial of any Russian manipulation, and said the investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller was proving a "disaster" for the United States.
