All-star line-up: Blood moon eclipse and a Mars fly-by

The partial eclipse will begin at 2:24 P.m. - that's when the Earth's shadow will begin to creep across the moon. While they will show the entire eclipse, if you're looking for totality, it occurs from 3:30 p.m. ET to 5:13 p.m. ET.

On the night of the total lunar eclipse, Mars and the moon will be roughly six degrees apart in the night sky.

On July 27 at around 10pm, the red planet Mars will be directly opposite to the Sun and at the same time being at closest distance from the Earth at about 56 million kilometres.

And yes, you'll likely hear this eclipse being referred to as the "blood moon".

The professor, however, said that the next total lunar eclipse that would be visible in Nigeria would occur on January 21, 2019.

The areas of our planet from which this can be experienced are very limited, because the total lunar eclipse must be ongoing at the time of moonset/sunrise.

The eclipse, however, will not be visible from North America or most of the Pacific.

This happens because blue light undergoes stronger atmospheric scattering, so red light will be the most dominant color highlighted as sunlight passes through our atmosphere and casts it on the moon.

In a lunar eclipse, the Earth, sun and moon are nearly exactly aligned, with the Earth in the middle.

The moon will be totally eclipsed for an estimated 1 hour and 43 minutes in the prime viewing region, according to NASA predictions.

And it's considered a "micro moon", though that isn't an official astronomical designation.

"Part of South America will be able to watch the final stages of the eclipse just after sunset on July 27".

Part of the Moon's shadow fell near the South Pole, so partial coverage of the Sun was visible in parts of southern Australia.

On December 26 next year, people in Brunei will be experien-cing a partial solar eclipse when the moon passes in front of the Sun.

Due to how its relative size in the sky, the eclipse makes it appear as if there's a ring of light around the moon.

Astronomers' telescopes aimed at the blood moon have seen this happening, as well as another mysterious phenomenon - seemingly random spots of heat, often concentrated around craters. Because the Earth passes between the sun and the moon during this cosmic event, the light of the sun has to pass through our planet's atmosphere, casting a shadow on the moon. The moon will be in flawless alignment with the sun and Earth on Friday, with the moon on the opposite side of the Earth from the sun.

"The plane of orbit of the earth around the sun and the plane of orbit of the moon around the earth are very close to each other".

The celestial body appears so close to Earth that the lunar craters can be seen with the naked eye.
