Mars making closest approach to Earth in 15 years

As for novice astronomers who might be a little bummed they missed the 3:50 a.m. wake up call, NASA streamed Mars' close encounter with Earth live from the Griffith Observatory.

The Red Planet shines its brightest between July 27th and 30th as the Sun, Earth, and Mars all line up, with Earth sandwiched in the middle of the other two.

We are all presented with a chance to witness a rare event, as on July 31 Mars will reach the point in its orbit with the shortest distance to Earth in 15 years. Mars will reach opposition again before then.

The study finds that even using all of the sources of carbon dioxide and water on Mars to thicken the atmosphere would only increase pressure to 7% of that on Earth, "far short of what is needed". On Mars, the pressure of the atmosphere is less than one percent of the pressure of Earth's atmosphere.

Surface features on Mars suggest that the planet was once warmer and wetter eons ago, but research from spacecraft on and around Mars in recent years have shown that much of the planet's atmosphere and its moisture were lost to space in ancient times. At this point, the ringed planet was 1.4 billion kilometers (870 million miles) away from Earth and its spectacular rings are almost at maximum tilt toward the planet, offering a breathtaking angle of Saturn to photograph.

Still, he said, "I'd hate to die without speaking to Meghan again". But I won't be silenced", he insisted. 'I refuse to stay quiet. What riles me is Meghan's sense of superiority.

The Earth and Mars both orbit around the sun with the distance between the two planets usually at about 140,000,000 miles apart.

If you're looking through binoculars or a telescope, you will not be able to see the detail you normally do on the planet's surface; there's a massive dust storm obscuring most planetary details right now. The distance between the Mars and the Earth was 34.6 million miles (55.7 million kilometers). This is the nearest that Mars has come (57.6 million kilometers to earth) since its record-breaking close approach in August 28, 2003.

Mars will be closest to Earth on Tuesday, a phenomenon that occurs once in every 15 years. Weather permitting, Mars will be visible low on the southwestern horizon, with the moon shining to the upper left. Technically, in solar system talk, they are.

The next Mars Close Approach will occur on October 6, 2020.
