West Nile virus infection reported in Fairfax County

Last week, Maryland health officials reported the first confirmed case of a West Nile-infected adult in that state.

Health department director Dr. Sarah Moyer said in the release that precautions should be taken.

It comes one day after bug expert Taz Stuart told Global News that August long weekend is traditionally the riskiest time of year to be infected by the disease.

West Nile, which is spread by the infected mosquitoes, doesn't cause symptoms in most people, but those who do become sick may contract a fever or experience a more severe infection in their brain or spinal cord. Our goal is for that to be the only one. The infected mosquitoes were found in surveillance traps in those areas. "By eliminating places for mosquitoes to lay eggs, using insect repellent and other protective measures, and targeted use of pesticides, we can all make sure Pennsylvanians are protected".

Overall, 39 cases of West Nile have been reported in humans as of July 24. The pool of water that collects in a single upturned bottle cap can incubate hundreds of eggs. Long sleeves and trousers if possible. Residents are reminded to wear light-coloured, long-sleeved shirts and trousers and use mosquito repellent containing DEET if older than six months of age.

Helwig and Carroll said the wet, hot weather is driving the increase in West Nile.

According to WHO, WNV is maintained in nature in a cycle involving transmission between birds and mosquitoes.

"However, this can change from week to week and we urge people to protect themselves and do their part to reduce the spread of mosquito populations in their neighbourhoods and communities by removing standing water".

It's not uncommon to find West Nile virus in mosquitoes found in Peel Region.
