Chelsea close to loan deal for Real Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic

With speculation over the future of Thibaut Courtois, Willian and Eden Hazard, Chelsea's concerns were compounded on Sunday with a Community Shield defeat to Manchester City.

Chelsea are in talks to sign Mateo Kovacic, the Real Madrid midfielder, after he told the Spanish club today that he wants to leave.

In fact, reports suggest they may have already done just that.

The deal, which is not yet finalised, is said to please all three parties as the 24-year-old is guaranteed regular game time, Chelsea will have another option for their midfield and Real do not permanently lose out on a player they still rate highly.

The plane is registered to a San Francisco-based real estate consulting company, Category III, according to an FAA database. The pilot of the Cessna 414 and all four passengers were killed but nobody on the ground was hurt, authorities said.

The agreement between the clubs will be announced in the next few hours and Kovacic will soon depart for London to embark on his new adventure.

That's because Madrid boss Julen Lopetegui has reacted to reports that Kovacic has missed training and is set to leave the club - and he strongly denied it.

The news will also be of great interest to Inter, however, as it could have repercussions on their pursuit of Kovacic's team-mate Luka Modric. He's someone I hold in particular esteem, and who I am happy to have in the team. Today, Chelsea have agreed a deal to sign Mateo Kovacic...

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has dismissed any real chance of Luka Modric's departure by declaring that any buyer must pay his €750 million (£670m/$870m) release clause.
