Unveiling of provincial buck a beer scheme expected today

How do you brew, bottle and sell beer for $1 that will attract consumers, taste reasonably decent and, at the end of the day, turn a profit?

"Nobody is being forced to lower their prices and there will be no subsidies or tax handouts", Ford said at the event.

"We promised buck-a-beer and we're delivering on our campaign promise", he added. The PC government's "buck-a-beer challenge" is really a challenge to see brewers produce beer more cheaply today than they did a decade ago, despite the higher associated costs.

Addressing the media and a crowd of protesters, Ford announced that the buck-a-beer program will come into effect August 27, just in time for the Labour Day weekend. Andrea Horwath, the leader of Ontario's New Democratic Party, slammed Ford for keeping his promises regarding beer while turning his back on the 4,000 residents who were relying on the unconditional payments to buy healthier food, access childcare or go back to school.

However, brewers are not required to charge less, and the lower minimum price is expected to exclude draft beer and excludes the bottle deposit.

When Ontario's minimum price for beer drops to $1 just before the Labour Day weekend, craft brewers probably won't pour any effort into changing the price of their products.

China to hit back at USA with 60 billion dollars tariffs
Beijing's Customs Tariff Commission of the State Council said the tariffs would range from 5 percent to 25 percent. Chinese state media on Monday lashed out at U.S.

"I don't think a lot of breweries will be participating in this", Meek said, "I think it's a bad idea".

The Tories have said a return to buck a beer would see more competition in the beer market without affecting the province's revenues from beer and wine taxes, which government documents show brought in roughly $589 million in 2016-2017. "The margins keep getting tighter and tighter and you want to invest in your company, to grow and create more jobs". The province used to allow beer to be sold for $1, but the Liberal government increased the minimum price in 2008, citing a mandate of "social responsibility". The caveat specifying that only bottles qualify for the price comes at a time when the LCBO and the Beer Store are pushing suppliers to ditch bottles in favour of 473 ml cans which are growing in appeal to consumers.

"It's basically a discriminatory promotion, in that it's only going to be leveraged by brands that are sufficiently close to that price-point".

"Our cheapest beer costs us about $1.40 to make, and that's just pure cost to make the beer". Many Ontarians took to Twitter Tuesday to voice their discontent with the "buck-a-beer" announcement, particularly in light of the government's recent cancellation of a Basic Income Pilot project. "I don't know if we could actually sell canned water for $1 so we definitely couldn't sell premium craft beer".

Breweries in the province have also been outspoken against the challenge.
