Donald Trump to slap sanctions on Russian Federation for Skripal poisoning

The State Department said the US this week made the determination that Russian Federation had used the Novichok nerve agent to poison Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Yulia, and that sanctions would follow.

The Trump administration said Wednesday it would impose more sanctions against Russia as punishment for its use of a nerve agent in an attempt in March to assassinate British citizen and ex-Russian intelligence officer Sergei Skripal and his daughter.

"Following a 15-day Congressional notification period, these sanctions will take effect upon publication of a notice in the Federal Register, expected on or around August 22, 2018".

The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, the worldwide chemical weapons watchdog, concluded in April that the nerve agent Novichok, known to have been first produced by the Soviet military, had been used in the attack against the Skripals, both of whom survived, although it did not assign blame.

While Skripal and his daughter survived the attack attributed to the Russian nerve agent Novichok, a British woman died and her companion became gravely ill after coming in contact with the substance just miles from the site of the March attack.

Police think the novichok was sprayed or smeared on their front doorknob with a perfume bottle.

Canadian dollar whipsaws as row with Saudi Arabia escalates
Almost 100 global students in Waterloo Region could be affected as tensions heat up between Saudi Arabia and Canada. It stopped medical treatment of Saudis in Canada and made arrangements to bring home Saudi patients.

There would, however, be exemptions for space flight activities, government space cooperation, and areas covering commercial passenger aviation safety, which would be reviewed on a case by case basis, the official added.

It would reportedly include more drastic measures, such as downgrading diplomatic relations, banning the Russian airline Aeroflot from flying to the USA and cutting off almost all exports and imports.

The attack led, three months later, to the subsequent death of Dawn Sturgess, and the contamination of her partner, Charlie Rowley.

The Government has been consistent in pointing the finger of blame at Moscow for the poisoning using novichok - a military-grade nerve agent developed by the former Soviet Union.

While criticized as too keen to strike up a friendship with Putin, Trump maintains that he's been tough on Moscow.
