Tropical storm warning posted for Big Island

Earlier in the day, the center downgraded Hector to a Category 3 storm and it's expected to continue losing steam over the next couple of days. The storm is southeast of Newfoundland and moving north at 16 miles per hour.

The County of Hawai'i is under a Tropical Storm Watch.

Hurricane Hector, with 130 mph winds, is about 540 miles east-southeast of Hilo. A tropical storm watch was in effect for the Big Island as Hector was expected to pass Tuesday night and Wednesday as it moved westward. "If it does, it will become Typhoon Hector".

On Monday, Hector's maximum sustained winds peaked at an estimated 155 miles per hour, just shy of Category 5 intensity, making it the strongest central Pacific hurricane since Ioke in 2006, according to Colorado State University tropical scientist Dr. Phil Klotzbach. It was likely to bring rain to the southern part of peninsula as well as heavy surf.

The active season in the Pacific contrasts to the relatively quiet season in the Atlantic.
