Mosquitoes test positive for West Nile

West Nile virus is transmitted through bites from mosquitoes that pick up the virus after feeding on an infected bird, but most mosquitoes and birds do not carry the virus. They contracted the virus in late July and were hospitalized.

Aerial spraying has also occurred over agricultural areas outside the city limits.

The last human case reported in Cascade County was in 2015, according to a press release from the Cascade City-County Health Department.

Anyone concerned about mosquitoes should avoid being out at dawn and dusk.

West Nile virus has been detected in the state every year since 1999.

Most people infected with the virus don't show symptoms, but those who have a reaction may experience fever, nausea, headaches and muscle aches for a few days or weeks.

West Nile fever generally resolves itself without treatment, but unsafe brain infections such as encephalitis or meningitis can develop in 1 out of 150 people, according to the press release. DEET products should not be used on infants under two months of age and should be used in concentrations of 30% or less on older children. Dispose of water-holding containers, such as ceramic pots, used tires, and tire swings. Report swimming pools that are not being properly maintained by contacting the Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito & Vector Control District at 1-800-429-1022 or www.fightthebite.net/pool-program. Make sure doors and windows have tight-fitting screens to keep out mosquitoes and fix or replace screens with tears or holes.

Use mosquito netting when sleeping outdoors.

"The identification of two CT residents with West Nile virus associated illness that required hospitalization underscores the potential seriousness of infection", said DPH Commissioner Dr. Raul Pino in a statement.
