Sevilla Threaten Super Cup Action Against Barcelona

A Sevilla club statement read: "Sevilla FC is surprised by the RFEF [Spanish football federation]'s statement 24 hours before the Super Cup".

Messi lifted the Spanish Super Cup on Sunday night after helping Barcelona beat Sevilla 2-1, and it was his first trophy as the main captain.

Though Barcelona do have Philippe Coutinho, Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi who hail from outside of the European Union, all three have European Union citizenship with Coutinho recently gaining a Portuguese passport according to reports.

Pablo Sarabia opened for Sevilla in the ninth, when the video assistant referee overruled an offside call in the first use of VAR in Spanish competition.

Both sides looked capable of finding a victor in the second half, but Dembele's thumping drive won it with 12 minutes left.

"It was a very hard match because we started off by falling behind and we had to mount a comeback".

"In fact, he got better as the game went on".

Valverde had said before the game that he "didn't know" if Dembele would leave the club before the end of the transfer window amid reports of interest from Paris Saint-Germain. Sevilla defended well and kept their shape but they also had their chances.

"My team deserve a lot of credit for showing that we have soul spirit and courage after Dembele's great goal and not only did we win a penalty but we also swarmed all over their goal", said Sevilla coach Pablo Machin.

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen secured the win when he saved a penalty kick from Sevilla substitute Wissam Ben Yedder in the 89th after Ter Stegen fouled former Barcelona forward Aleix Vidal.

This was Messi's first official game as Barcelona captain after Andres Iniesta left the club, and the Argentine ended up lifting his first trophy with the armband.
