The world No.16 broke Berten's serve fours times and never faced a break point to book her first-ever semi-finals appearance in Canada.

The No 3 seed progressed to her third final of 2018, which will be a re-match of her French Open clash with Halep in June. Halep thus reached 18 career titles. I think she's a complex player. I am feeling much better, ' Svitolina commented on her game. In the quarterfinals, she went up against Anastasija Sevastova and won 6-2, 6-2.

Halep's scheduling dispute with tournament organizers looked to have no effect on her play on the court.

It added up to a tough week for Halep, who won the tournament the last time it was in Montreal in 2016.

At 6-4, Stephens again had her chances but it was Halep who would take the first set with four points in a row. Halep has had a largely excellent season, highlighted by her French Open victory, and will consider herself amongst the favourites in NY.

Reportedly, Svitolina became a victor of Rogers Cup.

"I've been playing well, consistent and that's great", said Stephens. Making the finals here is incredible. "Yeah, it's disappointing, but I think this will help me moving forward, getting ready to go into [Cincinnati] and the U.S. Open".

Stephens led throughout the second set, breaking Halep twice, but the Romanian took control of the third set, turning a break into a 5-2 advantage.

Another poor service game from Halep though gave the initiative back to Stephens, who broke for 5-5 and then held for a 6-5 lead.
