Simona Halep, weary and aching, reaches Montreal final

For the title in Montreal Halep fought against American Sloane Stephens, which is at the semifinal stage in two sets was the first racket of Ukraine Elina Svitolina.

The win moved Halep into Sunday's final against the victor of a Saturday evening match between third-seeded Sloane Stephens of the United States and defending champion Elina Svitolina of Ukraine.

Svitolina beat 14th-seeded Elise Mertens 7-5, 6-3 in the late match.

The French Open champion was too good for 15th seed Barty in their first encounter, the Australian racking up 37 unforced errors as she was soundly beaten.

The world No.16 broke Berten's serve fours times and never faced a break point to book her first-ever semi-finals appearance in Canada.

The No 3 seed progressed to her third final of 2018, which will be a re-match of her French Open clash with Halep in June. Halep thus reached 18 career titles. I think she's a complex player. I am feeling much better, ' Svitolina commented on her game. In the quarterfinals, she went up against Anastasija Sevastova and won 6-2, 6-2.

Halep's scheduling dispute with tournament organizers looked to have no effect on her play on the court.

But she insisted she "never signed that draconian NDA that they presented to me when I walked into the White House". He puts out so much information and misinformation so I think people start paying less attention to the scandals.

"I think I talked enough about it", she said. Before my retirement, I didn't play good on hard, my best surface was clay because I grew up on clay. She's playing good tennis.

It added up to a tough week for Halep, who won the tournament the last time it was in Montreal in 2016.

At 6-4, Stephens again had her chances but it was Halep who would take the first set with four points in a row. Halep has had a largely excellent season, highlighted by her French Open victory, and will consider herself amongst the favourites in NY.

Reportedly, Svitolina became a victor of Rogers Cup.

"I've been playing well, consistent and that's great", said Stephens. Making the finals here is incredible. "Yeah, it's disappointing, but I think this will help me moving forward, getting ready to go into [Cincinnati] and the U.S. Open".

Stephens led throughout the second set, breaking Halep twice, but the Romanian took control of the third set, turning a break into a 5-2 advantage.

Another poor service game from Halep though gave the initiative back to Stephens, who broke for 5-5 and then held for a 6-5 lead.
