Ex-CDC director Frieden accused of groping woman's buttocks

The former head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was released without bail on Friday after being arraigned on charges he groped a longtime family friend at his Brooklyn apartment. In that job, he fought against trans-fats in NYC restaurants and instituted other policies that drew ire from civil libertarians such as scrapping written consent for HIV testing and establishing an involuntary diabetes database.

He began his tenure as CDC director in the early days of the 2009 H1N1 pandemic.

The married father-of-two is accused of grabbing the buttocks of a 55-year-old woman he knew during a dinner party at his home last October. The unidentified woman reported the incident in July, and Frieden surrendered to authorities at the New York Police Department's Special Victims Unit in the borough Friday morning, law enforcement officials told ABC News.

"He was arrested for forcible touching, for sexual abuse and harassment, for touching her buttocks without permission", a NY police spokeswoman said. He was still in NYPD custody and scheduled to appear in court today.

Funeral services announced for Mollie Tibbetts
So far, authorities said they have not found anything indicating that Tibbetts and Rivera knew each other before the attack. According to Rivera's relatives and his employer, he gave off no indications of what police said he had done.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Frieden says the allegation "does not reflect Dr. Frieden's public or private behavior or his values over a lifetime of service to improve health around the world". Although the accuser is not an employee of Vital Strategies, the organization launched an investigation into any possible sexual misconduct allegations, Castro said.

The former head of the Atlanta-based Centers of Disease Control and Prevention has issued a denial in response to a woman's allegation he groped her buttocks at his NY home. "In all of my experiences with him, there have never been any concerns or reports of inappropriate conduct".

In the '90s, he led a program to control tuberculosis in a NY, lowering incidences whereby people were resistant to multiple drugs. He resigned from the CDC on the day of President Trump's inauguration.

The president of Vital Strategies, Jose L. Castro, came out in support of Frieden.
