Sen. John McCain dies at 81

The family of the six-term US senator announced on Friday that he had chose to end treatment in his battle against brain cancer, which he had fought against for over a year.

After his diagnosis in July of 2017, McCain continued serving as a senator for Arizona.

The statement went on to say: "Our family is immensely grateful for the support and kindness of all his caregivers over the previous year, and for the continuing outpouring of concern and affection from John's many friends and associates, and the many thousands of people who are keeping him in their prayers".

Meghan McCain released a heart-warming statement minutes after reports surfaced that her father, Sen.

In a joint statement, the former USA leader and ex-secretary of state said: "Senator John McCain believed that every citizen has a responsibility to make something of the freedoms given by our constitution, and from his heroic service in the navy to his 35 years in Congress, he lived by his creed every day".

In 2008, he defeated a host of Republican candidates to win the GOP nomination for president.

A pilot, he was shot down over Vietnam and held as a prisoner of war for more than five years.

Senator McCain was unabashedly a conservative - succeeding Barry Goldwater as a senator from Arizona - but would reach across the partisan divide for great causes. Others directly accused the deceased senator of pursuing his ideals at the cost of entire nations and wanting "to wipe Syria, Iran, Iraq, Palestine, and Vietnam off the map".

But just as it appeared his political career was about to take off, scandal threatened to take him down. In 2000, he ran for the Republican nomination for president, winning New Hampshire's primary but losing the nomination to George W. Bush.

McCain repeatedly hammered Barack Obama for his expressed willingness to meet with Iran's leaders and later on led the charge against the 2015 deal spearheaded by Obama that swapped sanctions relief for a partial rollback of Iran's nuclear program.

In what looks like his final legislative triumph, Trump signed into law the John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act earlier this month. Throughout his life, however, he offered a full-throated defence of an America that was active and engaged in the world.

McCain inveighed against Trump over the latter's meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki.

It's an open question as to whether these views have a future in his party. Whether it is self-belief, a feeling of obligation to the fans or a stubborn refusal to accept defeat, anytime you have seen a fighter enduring permanent damage with no hope of turning a fight around, the fact is he could have stopped his own beating at any time. Agree with him or disagree, that is undeniably a most appropriate epitaph.

Following news of his death, wellwishers waving flags lined the street as a hearse brought Mr McCain's body from his ranch in Sedona, Arizona, to a funeral home in Phoenix. "At his death, he had served the United States of America faithfully for sixty years", McCain's office said in the statement.

"But in this loss, and in this sorrow, I take comfort in this: John McCain, hero of the republic and to his little girl, wakes today to something more glorious than anything on this earth".

"Few of us have been tested the way John once was, or required to show the courage that he did", wrote former President Obama.

"At John's best, he showed us what that means".

Former Vice President Joe Biden wrote, "John McCain was many things - a proud graduate of the Naval Academy, a Senate colleague, a political opponent. A life lived embodying those truths casts a long, long shadow", the former vice president said.
