Sanders congratulates Gillum after Florida primary win

Gillum's victory could further energize black voters in a year when Democrats are already counting on high turnout among minorities to buoy the party in the November election.

Sanders initially endorsed Gillum on August 1 and campaigned for him at a rally in the state earlier this month. After Tuesday's primaries, only five states remain to pick candidates before full attention turns to the November election, when all 435 House seats and 35 of the 100 Senate seats will be at stake.

The Real Clear Politics average of polls shows DeSantis leading Putnam and several other candidates, though the race has tightened in the final weeks of the campaign.

The Democratic primary is now close between former Rep. Gwen Graham - a centrist and daughter of former governor and Sen.

With 51 percent of precincts reporting, DeSantis led state Agriculture Commissioner and former Rep. Adam Putnam 56 percent to 37 percent when The Associated Press called the race.

But Gillum, who became the youngest person ever elected to Tallahassee city commission at age 23, recently garnered an endorsement by former Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders.

Elsewhere Tuesday, GOP voters in reliably Republican Oklahoma backed mortgage company owner Kevin Stitt in a runoff for the gubernatorial nomination.

DeSantis has run as a strong supporter of Trump since launching his campaign in January, after the president tweeted in December 2017 that he'd make a "GREAT" governor of Florida.

This momentum behind Gillum's win could also energize Democrats across the board in the general, and could boost support for Sen. I'm trying to make Florida even better.

The Arizona seat of retiring Republican Jeff Flake, a Trump critic, is considered one of the two top takeover targets for Democrats, along with Nevada. With more than one-third of the vote counted.

McSally wasted no time taking on her Democratic opponent, calling the race "a choice between a doer and a talker, between a patriot and a protester".
