Pres. Trump Asserts 'No Political Necessity' To Keep Canada In New NAFTA

Trump on Friday formally informed Congress of his intent to enter into a trade deal with Mexico, with the notice adding the administration hopes Canada would be added to the new pact later.

The U.S. and Mexico on Monday agreed on terms of their own, including changes to rules for carmakers, and Canada has rejoined face-to-face discussions to preserve NAFTA as a three-country deal after sitting more than a month on the sidelines. "We are concerned that excluding Canada from a final agreement will limit our export opportunities and hurt the USA economy", said Gary Shapiro, the head of the Consumer Technology Association, in a statement.

He then noted the nation was far better off before NAFTA and suggested either we make a new deal with Canada or go back to pre-NAFTA.

"Remember, NAFTA was one of the WORST Trade Deals ever made".

President Trump's threats to cut Canada out of a new NAFTA is not getting much support at home.

On Twitter, Trump posted, "Wow, I made OFF THE RECORD COMMENTS to Bloomberg concerning Canada, and this powerful understanding was BLATANTLY VIOLATED".

When the Trump administration notified Congress a year ago that it meant to renegotiate NAFTA, critics note that it said it would enter talks with both Canada and Mexico.

Continetti continued. "President Trump understands the economic power of the United States in a way many other American politicians do not".

Ms Freeland said she had remained in close touch with her Mexican and USA counterparts throughout the summer and had already achieved "a high-level agreement with the US" on some of the pending issues on autos and labour rights.

"They've essentially divided Canada and Mexico". In addition, the union leader criticized the president over an Obama-era rule mandating additional overtime pay and for failing to pass legislation to improve US infrastructure, among other issues.

"There is no political necessity to keep Canada in the new NAFTA deal".

"I think all three countries have worked together very productively and we're getting more and more excited about the results", a senior U.S. official told reporters. Driving that optimism was agreement on auto content that would favour Canada and the United States due to their higher-wage workers, making it less appealing for manufacturers to move production to Mexico.

Canada's Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland revealed yesterday that the two countries are making progress and that an agreement is "within reach". Trade talks concluded Friday with no agreement between the US and Canada.

Dairy products are nearly three hundred percent tariff. "Because we've been told for over twenty-five years, 'trust us, this greement will be good for workers.' What we need is an agreement that we can enforce, no matter who's in the White House".

The Prime Minister's Office confirmed the conversation with Mulroney, whose government delivered the Canada-U.S.

After securing the agreement with Mexico on its terms, the USA piled on the pressure on Canada with its specific demands.

The new agreement between the US and Mexico focuses primarily on automobile manufacturing, including a provision to require that 40 to 45 percent of all automobile components be made by workers earning $16 or more per hour, which the USA hopes will help American manufacturers compete against low-wage auto workers overseas.
