Another hurricane is barreling toward Hawaii

Hurricane-force winds extended outward up to 30 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extended outward up to 115 miles.

As of 5 p.m. Friday, Olivia was circulating 100 mph winds as it churned some 1,290 miles east of Hilo, according to forecasters with the Miami-based National Hurricane Center.

Hurricane Olivia, a storm with sustained winds of 85 miles per hour, is churning toward Hawaii and could affect the island chain as early as Tuesday evening.

Meanwhile, further east in the Pacific, Hurricane Olivia was weakening and moving west-northwest.

Hurricane Olivia weakened Friday as it moved west toward Hawaii, the National Hurricane Center said. The advisory was expected to remain in effect through 6 a.m. today. We'll keep an eye on those 2 other hurricanes in the days to come. Flash flooding, though, could also be a concern. The proclamation declares the counties of Hawai'i, Maui, Kalawao, Kaua'i and the City and County of Honolulu disaster areas for the goal of implementing emergency management functions.

The storm's current motion is expected to continue with some slowing in forward speed through Monday. A watch is typically issued 48 hours before the anticipated first occurrence of tropical-storm-force winds, conditions that make outside preparations hard or unsafe.

The storm was expected to bring rain and high surf rising to rise up to 18 feet on east-facing shores of Hawaii Island and Maui.

It's approaching the islands from a completely different direction than last month's Hurricane Lane, which dumped record amounts of rainfall on the Big Island.
