Darnold, Jets score 31 unanswered points in 48-17 rout of Lions

First, Darnold moved the Jets 75 yards down the field on six plays, ending the drive with a 21-yard touchdown pass to Quincy Enunwa, who had a strong return after missing all of last season due to a neck injury suffered in practice.

After the Jets kicked a field goal, running back Isaiah Crowell, who had 10 carries for 102 yards in his Jets debut, broke off a 62-yard touchdown run that gave NY a 31-point lead. The Jets matched their road victory total from last season (with one) and set a franchise record for points in a road game.

Unfortunately for Em and the Lions though, the game didn't go too well as the Sam Darnold-led Jets crushed Detroit 48-17, giving their new head coach Matt Patricia plenty of things to work on ahead of next week's game against the 49ers. Credit coach Todd Bowles and offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates for not putting their rookie in a conservative shell and trusting him not to be shell-shocked. A few minutes later, Andre Roberts returned a punt 78 yards for a touchdown, the first punt return for a score since 2012.

There's no doubt the Jets' "New Jack City" secondary got jacked up to make Lions counterpart Matthew Stafford (four interceptions) look more like the rookie.

Stafford was 27 of 46 for 286 yards and a TD pass to Golden Tate early in the third quarter to tie it at 17.

The Rams ought to win, so let's talk more about the first.

You couldn't have drawn up a worse start for Darnold and the Jets. Darnold was still holding the ball while talking briefly with Stafford on the field.

Franklin is the first victor after the Miss America Organization announced a major change for the historic pageant. With the exception of passing the crown to Franklin, Mund was noticeably absent from most of Sunday's ceremony.

What the New York Jets displayed on defense and special teams may have been even more encouraging for Darnold and his teammates.

If Darnold himself isn't getting the job done, then the Jets' running backfield just might.

That decidedly Jets drought came to an end on Monday.

While Darnold and the offense were finding their groove, the Jets defense was dominating.

On the first play of the game, .

Darnold, the rookie out of USC whom NY selected third overall in the National Football League draft, led a three-play, 49-yard drive capped by a 41-yard touchdown to Robby Anderson as the Jets led 17-10 at halftime. Quandre Diggs intercepted his ill-advised lob down the left sideline on the first play from scrimmage and returned it 37 yards for a touchdown 20 seconds into the game.
