More than 80 people arrested in Russia pension protests

A further 180 protesters were reported to have been detained in the city of Yekaterinburg, in the Ural Mountains, 60 in the southern Russian city of Krasnodar, 40 in the Siberian city of Omsk, and 40 in Russia's capital, Moscow.

Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said police acted "in strict accordance with the law" adding that some were attacked by "hooligans and trouble-makers".

Ahead of the vote a Moscow court jailed Navalny for 30 days, just a couple weeks before he planned to stage a rally against a deeply controversial pension reform on election day.

On a single day of voting on September 9, mass riots of the supporters of Navalny took place throughout Russian Federation. Russia's second-largest city arguably saw the most robust response with riot police charging at protesters with batons.

Putin has moved to raise the retirement age for women from 55 years old up to 60 years old, and for men, up to 65 from 60.

More than 800 protesters were detained in Russian Federation over the weekend as they demonstrated against the plan to raise the retirement age from 60 to 65 for men and from 55 to 60 for women, according to BBC News.

President Vladimir Putin endorsed the plan, which was submitted by the government to the Russian State Duma, the lower house of parliament.

The demonstrators, predominantly people in their 20s and decades away from retirement, chanted "Russia without Putin" and held signs with messages such as "Putin, when will you go on pension?"

Kremlin ally, Sergei Sobyanin has been re-elected as Moscow's mayor, according to results released by Moscow election commission.

Elections to select the heads of 26 of Russia's 85 regions were also being held on Sunday, including in Moscow.

"In this situation, the authorities are interested in suppressing turnout a bit and making sure only "their" electorate shows up and votes the way they are supposed to", Stanislav Andreichuk, an elections analyst with the independent Golos election-monitoring group, told RFE/RL.

Navalny, who ran against Sobyanin in 2013 and had planned to lead a protest against proposed pension changes on Sunday, will spend election day behind bars after being convicted of violating protest laws.

Although the ruling United Russia Party had a dominant showing, four Kremlin-backed gubernatorial candidates will face runoff votes because they failed to win the more than 50% required for an outright victory, according to results carried by local media outlets.

Kremlin Pool/ZUMA Press/NewscomGoogle complied last week with the Russian government's demand that it remove YouTube ads featuring Alexei Navalny, a well-known critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
