As Trump fumes over leaks, Woodward pushes back on criticism

"These are people who are trying to survive and keep their job", Woodward said, explaining that the same officials have told reporters similar things off-the-record and he doesn't do off-the-record because he thinks it cheats the public. "You walk around this place and act like you're in charge, and you're not. Some of the things Trump did and does jeopardize the real national security". "We don't take it like others - like China", Trump is quoted as saying in the book, during the July 19 situation room meeting. "Bob Woodward is a liar who is like a Dem operative prior to the Midterms". He said Trump did not even notice that it was missing.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders assured reporters Monday that the president is not now considering using lie detectors to figure out which senior administrative official wrote the anonymous op-ed, The Washington Examiner reported. The tweets attracted widespread attention and concern - "the Internet lost its collective mind", as Woodward wrote in his book.

He insists the writer must be a "low-level individual" within the White House, and repeated calls for the Justice Department to unmask the author of the "disgusting" and "sad" piece.

Woodward said Monday that several current and former Trump administration officials were "not telling the truth" when they denied quotes attributed to them in Fear, including White House chief of staff John Kelly and Defense Secretary James Mattis.

WOODWARD: Well, if that person had come to me while I was working on this book or if it was somebody I interviewed, I would say, I need specifics. Democrats can't stand losing.

Woodward's reporting has some critics.

"I am proud of my service in the Trump Administration, and I continue to support the President and his economic agenda", Cohn's statement read. This is not a guy who makes big boasts and then fails to deliver on them. "Woodward or any member of his staff would have called me".

Woodward won a Pulitzer Prize for his reporting in the Post on the Watergate case in 1973, and a second for a 2002 New York Times section on the 9/11 attacks. There have been reports that Trump seems uninterested or unaware of the details of key foreign policy and national security efforts.

CNN host Victor Blackwell said in a segment with CNN correspondent Brian Stelter the president was so unhappy with Shine that he wants former aide Hope Hicks back in the White House. He began his presidency cocooned from the news and has grown only more so - seemingly (if his Twitter feed is an accurate representation) primarily watching Fox News at this point.

Woodward dismissed their written statements as unpersuasive. Now, at age 75, Woodward is pursuing another embattled president, this one leading a tumultuous administration and awaiting the judgment of a special counsel's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. The high interest "says people are anxious", Woodward said.
