Steve Yzerman stepping aside as Lightning GM

Tampa Bay Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman gestures during a news conference before an NHL hockey game against the Toronto Maple Leafs in Tampa, Fla., on February 26, 2018. Yzerman's family has remained in Detroit, and he commuted during his time on the job.

Muliple reports have indicated that Yzerman informed the Tampa Bay Lightning that he'll be stepping down as general manager, a position he's held in Tampa Bay since 2010.

It was a surprising move for a powerhouse team, one that reached the Eastern Conference final last season.

A source told the Detroit Free Press that Yzerman told Lightning players in the meeting that he was going home to Detroit, the city where he was made a legend and still lives during the offseason.

Pence: I’m confident no one on my staff wrote the NYT column
I'm 100 per cent confident that no one on the Vice-President's staff was involved in this anonymous editorial . And I'm just not aware of instances where they've occurred and or where they would occur.

In a National Hockey League stunner, Steve Yzerman will step down as Tampa Bay Lightning general manager just days before the start of training camp, the team announced on Monday.

A person with knowledge of the move said Tuesday that Yzerman is leaving his post and will be replaced immediately by longtime assistant Julien BriseBois.

"It will be business as usual for the Tampa Bay Lightning", BriseBois said. The Bolts lost the 2015 Stanley Cup Final to the Chicago Blackhawks in six games. The other signing Lightning captain Steven Stamkos to an eight-year, $68-million deal in 2016.

For those who don't know, Steve Yzerman was a Hall of Fame center and the captain of the Detroit Red Wings and brought the Stanley Cup to Hockeytown three times as a player. He began his front-office career as vice-president of hockey operations under GM Ken Holland in Detroit and was part of a Cup victor in 2008 before getting the head job with the Lightning. "Again, entirely speculation. And Ken Holland has a two-year extension with the Red Wings". Internationally, Yzerman was a member of Canada's gold medal-winning team at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. "If not this year, beyond".
