Apple takes down popular Mac utility app that stole users' browser data

At the time of the investigation, Dr. Unarchiver was the 12th most popular free app in the US Mac App Store, but it has since been pulled from the storefront.

Adware Doctor is basically created to remove any adware that is found in a Mac.

Apple has removed multiple apps by security vendor Trend Micro from its App Store, following allegations by researchers that the programs exfiltrate sensitive data without users' consent.

Trend Micro denies the claims in a statement on its blog.

The app market for just about every platform out there is rife with developers who use nefarious techniques to trick users into giving them access to their valuable personal data.

To make matters worse, which in itself was not correct, the well-known security app, of course, Adware Doctor application is compressing and sending the data it collects to a remote server somewhere in China.

Further analysis by security researcher Patrick Wardle showed that Adware Doctor sent the complete browser history from Safari, Chrome, and Firefox.

According to 9 to 5 Mac, the apps in question come from Trend Micro Inc., a Japanese company best known for handling IT Security. Readers must note that in Apple's Top Paid App List, this app was a top grossing application sitting at fifth spot.

New polls show slump in Donald Trump's approval rating
The Trump administration has been on an offensive in recent weeks, seeking to discredit Woodward and the contents of his book. But what really seemed to help sales are the early leaks from the book and the resulting condemnations from President Trump.

A developer by the name of Trend Micro Inc. which has several apps, including Dr. Unarchiver, Dr.

"It's blindingly obvious at this point that the Mac App Store is not the safe haven of reputable software that Apple wants it to be". According to Trend Micro, only the last 24 hours of browsing history would be collected and then uploaded to US-based Amazon servers.

He discovered that the app was promoting the Trend Micro Antivirus product in the store, with no apparent connection.

The company says it has updated the apps and they have deleted the logs from those apps including users browsing history.

The company added: "We have learned that browser collection functionality was designed in common across a few of our applications and then deployed the same way for both security-oriented as well as the non-security-oriented apps such as the ones in discussion". Reed is in the process of researching at least three other tools on Apple's App Store that do "very similar things".

Apple has yet to comment on the incident, and did not confirm whether the apps were removed as a direct result of its new policy.

"How can Apple claim to care about user privacy and allow an app like this to remain in the App Store?"

And Reed said it's best to not trust certain apps in the Mac App Store.
