Amazon's Bezos comments on Trump criticism

The charitable fund will "focus on two areas", Bezos explained: "funding existing non-profits that help homeless families, and creating a network of new, non-profit, tier-one pre-schools in low-income communities".

Bezos, who also owns The Washington Post and space exploration company Blue Origin, became the world's wealthiest person this year, with an estimated net worth of $164 billion, according to Bloomberg.

Jeff Bezos, Chairman and CEO of Amazon, speaks at the George W. Bush Presidential Center's Forum on Leadership in Dallas, Texas, US, April 20, 2018. Citing the Amazon mantra of customer obsession, Bezos said in a tweet here: "The child will be the customer".

Many on Twitter, however, did not hurry to heap praise on Bezos' new endeavor, pointing out Amazon's practices of underpaying its workers and forcing employees to work in stuffy warehouses without air conditioning.

Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon and owner of the Washington Post newspaper, warned Thursday that President Donald Trump's attacks on media are unsafe for the country.

According to the research firm eMarketer, Amazon's e-commerce revenue will grow more than 28 percent this year to reach $394 billion, and will account for 49 percent of USA online retail sales and almost five percent of all retail spending.

The fight soured many more locals on Amazon and Bezos, and also overshadowed the growing portfolio of philanthropy they had done in the city.

Jaitley denies meeting Mallya after liquor baron's claims outside London court
The clarification came hours after Jaitley said that he had not granted any formal appointment to Mallya. Vijay Mallya arrives at Westminster Magistrates Court in London , Britain, September 12, 2018.

Many Twitter users agreed with that reasoning. "If billionaires like Bezos were properly taxed then we wouldn't need billionaires like Bezos to sweep in and "rescue" people failed by our underfunded systems," one wrote.

Bezos asked for suggestions for philanthropic focuses in a tweet a year ago.

"We will build an organization to directly operate these schools".

Seattle, where Amazon has its headquarters, has been plagued by the rising number of homeless residents for the past several years.

And taking a look at social media, it's not Bezos alone.

An Amazon spokesman didn't have details on who would run Bezos' new initiative, or where the group would be based.

He has also been criticized for not contributing his fortune to philanthropy like other billionaires have, including Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Berkshire Hathaway's Warren Buffett. Some activists and politicians have partly blamed the city's problems on Amazon.
