United Kingdom economy will shrink without Brexit deal, International Monetary Fund warns

The mayor of London added his voice to the growing calls for another referendum on Britain's membership in the European Union, heaping more pressure on Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn to come off the fence ahead of his party's annual conference next week.

Despite Barnier's upbeat mood, there is, so far, no full exit agreement and some rebels in British Prime Minister Theresa May's Conservative Party have threatened to vote down a deal if she clinches one with the EU.

Speaking to BBC's Andrew Marr earlier today, he said: "Let me tell you the facts, which are that the police now are preparing for the possibility of civil unrest".

The fate of May's government and her Brexit plan is in doubt over whether she will be able to command the 320 votes needed in the House of Commons, the lower house of the British parliament, to approve a deal.

Writing in the Observer, London Mayor Sadiq Khan said that the United Kingdom is faced with either a "bad deal" or "no deal", and that the debate has become "more about Boris Johnson's political ambitions" than what was good for the country.

"I think Parliament will vote for a deal because I think people will see the importance of a deal that maintains a good trading relationship with the European Union but also maintains good cooperation in other areas, but gives us the freedom to take the benefits and opportunities of Brexit", she said in an interview broadcast Monday.

Trade Secretary Liam Fox said on Sky News that the Prime Minister is "doing a great job in hard circumstances", and that supporting her "is in our national interest".

Many Brexit supporters say Britain must distance itself from Brussels in order to strike its own trade deals with fast-growing economies around the world.

Two Republican senators urge committee to hear out Kavanaugh accuser before vote
Murkowski said that while the allegations "are very old", they "seem to go into fair amount of detail", Sciutto reported. She told other people about the alleged attack years before Kavanaugh was a Supreme Court nominee.

Since before the referendum, the International Monetary Fund and its managing director Christine Lagarde have taken the most hawkish of assessments of Brexit.

The IMF said it expected Britain's economy would grow by about 1.5% a year in 2018 and 2019 if a broad Brexit agreement was struck, compared with about 1.75% if it had stayed in.

Known as the "People's Vote", the second vote idea is gaining traction among some politicians, unions and business leaders who argue that the public should effectively get a say on the final negotiated deal.

That includes a vote in the British Parliament, where May's Conservatives don't have an overall majority and where her Brexit blueprint faces opposition from both pro- and anti-EU lawmakers.

It said challenges in getting a deal done were "daunting" and warned against further United Kingdom interest rate rises.

The Prime Minister delivered the warning to her political opponents - including her ex-Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson.

The Times newspaper reported that the EU's chief negotiator, Michel Barnier, is working on a new protocol text outlining how to use technology to minimise checks on the border.
