British caver sues Elon Musk over 'pedo' comments

A British diver who criticized Elon Musk's attempted contribution to the sensational cave rescue of a Thai boy's soccer team has filed suit against the billionaire for calling him a pedophile.

Vernon Unsworth claims Musk falsely accused him on Twitter of being a paedophile.

Documents filed in a US district court in California said that Musk had made "unlawful, unsupportable, and reprehensible accusations" about Unsworth and asked for $75,000 in compensatory damages and an unspecified sum for punitive damages.

The tech entrepreneur called Mr Unsworth a "pedo" after he criticised Mr Musk in a television interview.

Musk apologised on July 18, referring to Mr Unsworth in saying "his actions against me do not justify my actions against him", and that "the fault is mine and mine alone".

But on August 28, Musk tweeted again, writing: "You don't think it's unusual he hasn't sued me?"

In August, Musk questioned why Unsworth hadn't sued him yet.

"Sorry, we've gone from production hell to delivery logistics hell", Musk tweeted in response to a customer who said her Model 3 had been left in a train depot in Salt Lake City among 42 other Tesla cars left there undelivered.

Mr Unsworth was part of the team of global divers who became known worldwide after they successfully rescued all 12 youngsters and their football coach when they became trapped for two weeks by rising waters in a Thai cave complex.

'Mr Unsworth is not a paedophile.

It says Mr Musk sometimes used his Twitter account and emails to "publish to the world false and defamatory accusations" against the Briton. He was the first foreign rescuer to arrive.

Mr Musk later accused Mr Unsworth of moving to Thailand to "be with a bride who was about 12 years old".

The boys, aged 11-16, were reached on July 2 by Volanthen and Stanton, according to the lawsuit.

It conceded that Mr Unsworth was not involved in the final planning stages of the rescue because he did not have enough experience to make the dive. A separate lawsuit is being filed in London for the damages Unsworth, who is British, suffered in England and Wales, his lawyer said.

You'll recall Unsworth was critical of Elon's efforts to build a mini-submarine to help with the rescue.
