Four dead following shootout in Mexico City's 'mariachi' plaza

A shootout at a Mexico City tourist site has left at least four people dead, officials said on Saturday, a day after gunmen said by witnesses to be dressed as mariachi musicians opened fire with rifles and pistols in a plaza noted for its mariachi bars.

The shooters fled aboard three motorcycles, the Mexico City prosecutor's office said.

Garibaldi square is one of the main attractions of the capital of Mexico and has always attracted a lot of couples who come here to listen to the serenades performed by a Mariachi. The capital was kicking off weekend-long independence day celebrations.

Homicides have surged since 2014 in Mexico City, an arts, food and culture hotspot for tourists from around the globe that has been spared much of the drug violence plaguing cartel strongholds, which has even hit resort towns Cancun, Los Cabos and Acapulco.

The prosecutors' office said investigators were trying to find those responsible for the attack.

Gunshots can be heard over footage of a man playing "La Cucaracha" on a large harp.

Deadly Florence Wreaks Havoc in Carolinas as Death Toll Rises
The storm once known as Hurricane Florence has killed 20 people, trapped hundreds more and made parts of the Carolinas impassable. Large segments of the major corridor also were closed in North Carolina, making north-south travel subject to long detours.

In another, brass instruments and melancholic voices fill the air as the flashing lights of police vehicles descend on the plaza.

The three assailants carried out the shootings shortly before 10pm on Friday (0300 GMT Saturday) in the busy Plaza Garibaldi, police said.

"We haven't had any reservations cancelled and we continue to book tables", he said, asking that his name not be published for fear of retaliation by criminal groups.

In the year 2013, United States civil rights leader Malcolm X's grandson, Malcolm Shabazz, was beaten to death near the square after a dispute over a nightclub bill.

Plaza Garibaldi is located near the notorious Tepito neighbourhood, where a local gang that distributes drugs in the sprawling capital of 21 million is based.

Tepito has suffered a wave of violence over the last month after the gang's presumed leader, Roberto Moyado Esparza - or El Betito - was arrested.
