Japanese release unbelievable movie shot from the surface of asteroid Ryugu

The rovers will use their seven cameras to study Ryugu's estimated 3,020-foot (920-meter) surface, ultimately creating a 3D, composite image of the asteroid. The image was captured by the main spacecraft's telescopic optical navigation camera, or ONC-T, as it closed in on Ryugu for the rover drop on September 21.

They then "hopped" around on the surface of the asteroid, taking snaps of their surroundings.

Now, following the successful deployment of a pair of tiny rovers from Japan's Hayabusa-2 spacecraft, the first color images from an asteroid's surface have been sending back to Earth and boy are they creepy.

The rovers were blasted into space aboard the Hayabusa2 spacecraft, successfully landing on Ryugu on September 21.

"Gravity on the surface of Ryugu is very weak, so a rover propelled by normal wheels or crawlers would float upwards as soon as it started to move", JAXA scientists explained.

They then have a chance to win $4 million in prizes at the conclusion of the Fall Skirmish depending on how many points they earn. The tournament will be spread out over six weeks, which will include a variety of match types and team sizes.

"I love how this first image from the lander on the surface of the Ryugu asteroid is so Stanley Kubrickesque", the former commander of the International Space Station tweeted.

"I can not find words to express how happy I am", project manager Yuichi Tsuda said in a statement after the rovers' safe arrival was confirmed. "I am proud that Hayabusa2 was able to contribute to the creation of this technology for a new method of space exploration by surface movement on small bodies", Tsuda said. "It was taken on Ryugu's surface during a hop".

Next month, Hayabusa2 will deploy a device that will explode above the asteroid, shooting a 2kg copper missile to blast a small crater into its surface.

The pins on the rovers have a few roles: they increase friction when hopping, protect the solar cells that power the robots when landing, and a few of the pins have a sensor that can measure the asteroid's surface temperature directly. It later will attempt to land on the asteroid itself to collect samples to send back to researchers on Earth.
